Berni is a Chinese-Australian writer and director who has a minimalistic yet sensory approach to weaving narratives. Her works paint otherwise inexplicable sentiments rooted in the intersectional experiences of queer diaspora, coming of age, mother nature and Chinese culture. With an ethnographic background and deeply collaborative filmmaking practice, she hopes to invite people into a dreamlike world of reflexive nostalgia that lingers after the cinema.
After debuting her first poetic short “To Fly a Kite” (2023) at Sydney Film Festival and winning Best Narrative Short at Shanghai International Short Film Week, Berni is excited to share “Mango Seed” (2024), a further exploration of the filial emotions experienced by identity seeking diaspora. She has extensive experience working with artistic and cultural figures such as Nowness Asia, Chela, Wackie Ju, Matthew Ifield, Phoenix Central Park, Community Arts Network, The House of Reign and her commercial collaborators include ASICS, Champion, Lululemon, Bonds, Converse.
