Roland Cartagena (b. 1998, Zamboanga) is an emerging Filipino filmmaker based in Metro Manila, Philippines. He studied at the University of the Philippines Film Institute and completed his bachelor’s degree at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Cartagena primarily works with short form and straddles live-action and animation filmmaking. His works collectively appear eclectic in their refusal to conform to an apparent signatural look, albeit bound together by an affinity with themes related to ecology, labor, and their social tangents. His style is often contemplative and laconic, emphasizing imagery over narrative structure.
