Yun Dan, a Mongolian filmmaker born in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, has been deeply influenced by the history and culture of her ethnic group since childhood. This background has nurtured in her a strong drive to explore the historical contexts and contemporary realities of diverse ethnic communities. Her creative work often employs ethnic identity as a narrative lens through which she examines individual destinies.
She earned her BA in Scriptwriting from the Literature Department of Beijing Film Academy and later an MA in Film Direction from the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts. During her studies, she wrote and directed three fiction short films, followed by two documentary shorts, demonstrating a consistent focus on observational storytelling and a realist approach.
Now working in the film industry as a scriptwriter and project developer, Yun Dan continues to engage deeply with themes of ethnic culture and cross-cultural narratives. She is currently developing a feature-length project centered on a Muslim family in Xinjiang, through which she seeks to explore contemporary forms of cultural identity.
