In the spring of 2025, the coasts of California and adjacent Mexican waters witnessed a series of whale strandings. For these colossal beings, the moment of beaching signifies a cessation of time; their histories, once dynamic, become immutable upon landfall.
Each shutter release marks a collapse of time; the celluloid, an unstable relic, succumbs to gradual decay. Time, akin to tidal movements, cyclically resurfaces, coalescing into memory, solidifying into fossil, then receding - only to return.
Aftertide meditates on decaying 35mm film negatives and ephemeral footage, examining the interplay between sound, corporeality, and temporality.
