Confession Room (2025) reveals how the Islamic State uses pop culture aesthetics to build a narrative of lost glory and urgent restoration—“Make the caliphate great again!” The organization’s propaganda borrows from mainstream media, using fonts like Trajan from the Roman Empire, Lord of the Rings and Assassin’s Creed, and promotes heroic masculinity, redemptive violence, and anti-decadence. The film rejects “clash of civilizations” tropes, showing ISIS not as anti-modern but as deeply invested in global visual culture.
