Produced in 1949 by the Service Cinématographique des Armées (SCA), this propaganda film documents the French army’s efforts to establish and expand military outposts in Cochinchina. It portrays a system organized around fortified posts: soldiers keeping watch from observation towers and setting out daily on patrols by boat through jungles and waterways; villagers leading orderly lives around schools, markets, fields, and Buddhist temples, with access to basic medical services. During flag ceremonies, the French and Vietnamese flags are raised together as a symbol of “fraternity.” As part of the colonial narrative promoted by the SCA, the film constructs an image of harmony and progress within the framework of “pacification,” offering a revealing example of how cinema was used to mediate, justify, and aestheticize colonial presence.
