This program involves conducting brief email interviews with the directors of the international films featured in the festival, in lieu of the traditional Q&A session that follows the screenings. Through this program, we hope to provide a platform for filmmakers to discuss their work and share their insights with our audience in China.

Q1 : Why did you decide to shoot the film in a black and white tone? Does it relate to the overall storytelling or is it a preference in artistic style?


为什么选择用黑白影调来拍摄这部影片呢?是出于讲故事的需要还是艺术风格的偏好?


A1 : I wanted to make a timeless film. We do not know if the story is setting now or some decades ago. I chose the B&W as a hint, that it could be back at 60s and as a tribute to Nouvelle Vague, that I admire.


我想拍一部永恒的电影。我们不知道故事的背景是现在还是几十年前。我选择黑白画面是为了暗示故事可能发生在60年代,同时也是为了向我所推崇的法国新浪潮派致敬。





Q2 : Quite a lot of religious elements were put in this film. What’s your intention of using them? And whatrole they play in the whole film?


这部影片中有很多宗教元素的出现,你的用意是什么?它们在影片中起到了什么作用?


A2 : The young boy tries to connect with his dead father by going to the grave or trying to do it through the church of God, as his mother suggests to. But there he finds a bad and manipulating environment. In the whole film he tries to connect with something spiritual, so as to ease his suffer.


这个小男孩想要通过去墓地或者去教堂来与他的父亲建立联系,正如他的母亲建议的那样。但是在那他感受到的是不适且压抑的环境。在整个影片中,他想要链接一些灵性的东西,以此来减轻他的煎熬。





Q3 : I feel like the "father/Father" in this film carries various meanings, which even reminds me of the psychoanalytic theory of Freud. Could it be that the term "father" is being used asa specific symbol in this context?


我认为“父亲(神父)”在这部影片中有着多重含义,甚至让我想到了弗洛伊德的精神分析理论。在这里有被刻意用作一个特殊的符号吗?


A3 : Thanks for this question. I carefully chose the spoken words of the film. 80% of the spoken lines are filled with the word father/Father. I wanted the "Father" (priest) to try, intentionally, to be the new father of the family, so as to fill the gap after the loss of the real one.


谢谢你的这个问题。我很谨慎地挑选了影片的台词。百分之八十的台词都充满了“父亲/神父”一词。我想要这个“神父”有意地尝试成为这个家庭新的父亲,以此来弥补失去真正的那个父亲之后的空缺。





Q4 : Why you decide to use the fish as a metaphor? How did you build up the connection between the symbols and meanings you used in this film?


你为什么决定把鱼作为一种隐喻?影片中这些符号与意义的关系是如何构建的呢?


A4 : The young boy feels like "a fish out of the water" after the loss of his beloved father. Moreover, used the fish as a metaphor, because the motiv "fish" is used many times in Christianity. E.g. "the miracle of the five loaves and two fish" that Jesus did for a good reason. Here, l used the served fish for....a bad reason (in the final scene)


在失去了他挚爱的父亲之后,这个小男孩感觉像是“离开了水的鱼”。更多的时候,我把鱼用作一种隐喻,是因为鱼的意象在基督教中被用过很多次。比如“五饼二鱼”的神迹(记载于《福音书》),耶稣为了一个好的理由做了这件事。在这里,我在最后一幕运用了供奉的鱼,为了一个不好的理由。





Q5 : This film provides an unfamiliar prospective on childhood and grow-up, where everything seems so close and yet so far away. How did you come up with the idea of this film?


这部影片为童年和成长提供了一个陌生化的视角,一切都仿佛那么近又那么远。你创作时是如何构思的呢?


A5 : I wanted to make a film about the evil you find at angelic faces/ about the people who try to help you, but their real reason is dark and not the obvious one. I made this film with my family as the actors. The young boy is my nephew, actually. And I started this film as a "film masterclass" for my nephew and explained every part of the process to him, Now the world of cinema. seems familiar to him.


我想拍摄这样一部影片:讲述你在天使面孔下发现的邪恶,讲述那些试图帮助你的人,但他们的真正原因是黑暗的,而不是表面上的那个。这部电影是我和家人一起拍摄的,小男孩其实是我的侄子。我把这部影片作为我侄子的"电影大师班",向他解释了电影制作过程的每一个部分,现在他对电影世界已经很熟悉了
