本科毕业于西南大学美术系油画专业，研究生毕业于北京电影学院导演系；
电影导演，编剧，监制；
北京电影学院导演系教授。
2019年编剧导演电影《热汤》（后期制作中）。
2018年编剧导演电影《冥王星时刻》，入选七十一届戛纳国际电影节导演双周单元；2015年编剧导演《九号女神》获陕西省“五个一工程奖”； 2013年编剧导演电影《她们的名字叫红》，获第十六届上海国际电影节“传媒大奖评委特别奖”； 2011年导演编剧电影《郎在对门唱山歌》，获第十四届上海国际电影节“金爵奖”最佳编剧、最佳女演员、最佳音乐等五项大奖；导演编剧电影《新娘》（2009年）、《结果》（2006年）和《秘语拾柒小时》（2001年），均入围包括东京、釜山、柏林、洛杉矶、鹿特丹、首尔、巴黎、香港等国际影展。导演电影《院长爸爸》，入选2007年中国电影20部优秀电影华表奖；1996年电影导演处女作作《巫山云雨》入选柏林电影节、纽约电影节、旧金山电影节等并获得釜山、都灵、温哥华等国际影展八项首奖。
亦曾担任若干国际国内影展评委，如韩国釜山国际电影节、阿根廷布宜若斯艾利斯电影节、日本冲绳电影节、中国丝绸之路电影节、中国大学生电影节、中国导演协会年度荣誉终评委等。
论著有《找到一种电影方法》等。
