In 2022, it was my first visit to Okinawa.
As the plane approached Okinawa Island, due to air currents and excessive speed, the captain announced "Another Approach," leading us to circle in the air for nearly an hour before safely landing at Naha Airport. The anxiety and tension while waiting to land seemed to hint at uncovering the unknown history of Okinawa that lay ahead.
"Approach" implies getting closer or nearing, while "Another Approach" metaphorically suggests exploring Okinawa from a different perspective beyond its typical vacation island image.
Okinawa Island was the only site of ground battles in Japan during World War II. During my stay, I visited many local "historical sites," such as the Okinawa Peace Memorial Park and the former Navy headquarters' tunnels.
Through observing another island, I unexpectedly saw Taiwan.
We share similar customs, landscapes, and historical contexts, and I, starting from the perspective and identity of a Taiwanese, will combine children's interviews, sound collection, fictional character narration, and other methods in the video work "Another Approach" to present, both factually and imaginatively, the past and present of an island.
