(Future Ethics)

As the world grapples with climate change, ecological imbalance, and resource depletion, the relationship between humanity and the Earth is undergoing a profound transformation. In response to WWF's China Climate Action Week (CCAW) initiative, and with the support of "One Planet" Shenzhen Natural Fund, this year's BISFF has specially curated an environmental film unit, "Future Ethics." Through the medium of film, we aim to inspire audiences to reflect on humanity's role and place in the ecological network and explore the possibilities of coexistence. These works, through multi-layered narratives, seek to touch upon the interactions between human and non-human life forms, thereby revealing how humanity can respond to and reconstruct future lifestyles in the face of global crises.

Ecological philosopher Val Plumwood argues that all living beings on Earth constitute a complex interdependent system, and that human survival and well-being depend on the health and balance of ecosystems. Humans should not view nature as an external, passive resource, but rather recognize the deep connection between humans and the natural world. From this perspective, "Future Ethics" presents not only an observation of nature but also an attempt to re-understand our living environment, prompting viewers to consider how to achieve true ecological balance based on coexistence.

These visual works evoke a keen awareness of ecological relationships, guiding viewers to shift from an external, dominating perspective to an internal, co-existing perspective. The aim is to break down the anthropocentric framework through narrative and bring viewers into a multi-species, cross-ecological dialogue.

FE - 1 Gazing at the Beast: Reflecting on Boundaries

The dynamic relationship between humans and animals is a complex interplay of intimacy and understanding. Gazing at the beast is a multifaceted exploration of this relationship, examining both the tense and imbalanced boundaries between humans and animals and the delicate bonds formed through mutual care and shaping. This interaction is not merely an act of compassion but a potential language between humans and nature. This "magic of perception" allows us to reimagine cross-species communication. The belief in the inherent spirit of all beings helps us to respect and understand the intrinsic value of all life.

FE - 2 Dialogue: Resonances of the Fictional

Philosopher Jane Bennett, in her theory of "vibrant matter," argues that every element in the material world possesses its own agency and vitality. This perspective challenges the human-centric view of the non-human world, emphasizing the diversity and interdependence within ecosystems. In the films of this unit, dystopian settings force humanity to relinquish control over ecosystems, demonstrating how ecosystems can operate independently of human will in scenarios of resource depletion and environmental imbalance. We will encounter a decentralized world where humans are no longer the sole protagonists but merely one force among many biological powers. These films remind us that human dominion over ecosystems may be an illusion, and that the real world is brimming with an uncontrollable vitality.

FE - 3 Burning the Future: The Energy Crisis and a Heating Planet

This section of films focuses on the current energy crisis, exploring the dangers of fossil fuels and their profound impact on global warming. While fossil fuels such as oil and coal have powered modern civilization, they have irreversibly altered the Earth's ecosystem. In Timothy Morton's concept of the "hyperobject," fossil fuels are seen as an uncontrollable force with vast and enduring consequences. Global warming is not merely a direct consequence of fossil fuel use but a deep threat to the entire ecosystem and the future of humanity. The complexity of climate change exposes the illusion of human control over the Earth. Morton argues that this large-scale crisis compels us to abandon our notion of dominating nature and to reconsider our relationship with the planet.

FE - 4 Return: Geopolitics in Dialogue with Ecology

Since the 1992 UN Convention on Biological Diversity, the importance of traditional ecological knowledge has been formally recognized. The convention calls on nations to protect and learn from Indigenous wisdom to address global climate change and ecological crises. Through generations of living in harmony with nature, Indigenous peoples have not only maintained the resilience of ecosystems but have also demonstrated a more sustainable way of life. Elizabeth Povinelli's concept of "geontologies" argues that elements of nature, traditionally considered "inanimate" in Western philosophy, are integral parts of Indigenous worldviews. Within the capitalist and postcolonial global system, Indigenous ways of life and their relationships with nature are not merely cultural heritage but survival strategies for addressing modern ecological challenges and a subtle resistance to the exploitative logic of capitalism.

This unit aims to depict a world both familiar and strange, where the relationship between humans and nature is not one of domination and exploitation but of mutual shaping and care. This non-instrumental view of nature resonates with Povinelli's concept of geontologies: Indigenous knowledge systems offer an alternative to modern society, a way of life that reestablishes a deep connection between humans and the environment.
